Action Map Workbook – Simplifying Your Goal Setting

Action Map Workbook – Simplifying Your Goal Setting

Maybe it’s happened to you…you created a vision board only to tuck it under your bed or stuff in the back of your closet, never to be seen again. Why did that happen?

I’ve owned companies most of my adult life and for many years have had my employees create vision boards. I watched as they struggled to write specific goals and make a board they would be excited to display (final product, think kindergarten art project). Over the years I figured out what was happening, our system was backward! They weren’t taking the time to really delve in to figure out their life goals for the next 12 months. The lack of intentional planning and taking the time to pursue true inner desires was creating boards that didn’t resonate and a waste of time.

Here’s what I’ve learned.

Put Down the Magazines!

A common mistake when people start to work on their vision boards is to peruse through magazines trying to find things that excite or resonate with them. Did you really want to buy a Tesla? Probably not, but the magazine ad looked good so you cut it out. How about a trip to Hawaii? It’s never been on your bucket list, but now it’s front and center.

A slight change in process will change all of this. Instead of starting with magazines, start with a comprehensive goal setting worksheets. Save the magazines for the final design process.

Six Life Categories of Goal Setting

A systematic approach to goal setting begins with the six key areas of your life. For each area, identify two or three goals you are going to accomplish in the next year. Goal setting is an intentional approach to identifying your vision, mapping out your journey and living the life you’re intended to live.

Categories:

Personal | Adventure

Health | Fitness

Spiritual | Faith

Family | Relationships

Professional | Career

Financial | Money

Tip: You most likely won’t have several goals in each category. You may only work on one category over the course of a year! Don’t overwhelm yourself with a pile of goals that you can’t possibly accomplish. Be specific and be fussy!

System for Followup

Once your board is complete, where will you display it? Make sure it’s in a place where you can see and review daily.

Also, update your board throughout the year, but don’t remove items you have already accomplished. If you like checklists, create a system to mark off items you’ve completed.

Tony Robbins said, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible”. Set aside time to set your intent and complete your workbook. And then, it’s time to reveal your future self visually by assembling your board.

After our company changed the process from starting with magazines to moving over to completing structured worksheets, it has made all the difference. It made our dream boards much more successful and we know it will work for you as well.

All the best to your vision board endeavors!
