Everyone has their own goals and aspirations in life that they want to achieve before their time on earth is up. From life and financial goals to career and spiritual aspirations, these things guide your life and you want to hit upon them all. With that common mindset, it is no wonder why so many people tend to make a massive list for themselves to achieve, which in the long run is not exactly the best route to take. In fact, setting too many goals can actually crash your progress and overwhelm your planning strategies.
How Many Goals Are Too Many?
If you have a list of 100 goals, then that is too many. If you have a list of 50 goals for one given year, again too many. Even 5 to 10 really strong ones might be too much to divide your attention and focus. As a rule of thumb, you will want to strive to have around 3 goals that you can dedicate your time to in a given year. Make sure that those 3 goals are hearty and complement each other too while providing genuine meaning when you complete them. The lesser amount of solid goals you have, the easier it will be to reach them.
Tips on Setting Smart Goals
- Focus on Quality, Not Quantity: Get rid of the mindset that quantity matters in this scenario. What matters is the quality of your goal, what it means to you, its importance, and how it is going to benefit your life other than just being able to say you completed something.
- Define What You Want Out of Life: Understanding what your desires and passions are will strongly guide you in making the best goals to strive for, both long term and short term. So instead of shooting in the dark or making goals based on what other people are doing, dig deep inside your core and find out what it is you want.
- Be as Detailed as Possible: One of the biggest reasons people fail at goal setting is the fact that they are too vague or irrelevant when coming up with them. This leads to underdeveloped action plans and fosters an unclear route that can keep you accountable.
- Invest in A Vision Board: It cannot be stressed enough how vital a vision board is for staying on track and motivated to reach your goals. This is the ultimate resource to be successful and you own that to yourself.
What Now?
In summary, goals are excellent to have, but making too many of them is not as healthy as it may sound on paper. Though the idea of having a huge list of goals and aspirations to fulfill sounds inspiring and dedicated, it is only going to hinder you.
Instead, take the proper time to strategically set your life goals in such a way that is not overpowering, manageable, and not overwhelming so you can successfully check each one off as you follow through and accomplish them.
